In brief

  • The professional first assesses the cause of the staining and the health of your mouth.
  • A home protocol may be offered, with trays and precise instructions.
  • Scale and polish removes tartar, and polishing can remove some surface stains.

Supervised treatment at the clinic

The professional first assesses the cause of the staining and the health of your mouth. The chosen protocol uses a suitable product and protects the surrounding tissues. The presence of a lamp does not, on its own, tell you what result to expect.

Trays prescribed for home use

A home protocol may be offered, with trays and precise instructions. The amount of product and the wearing time should not be improvised. Follow-up allows the approach to be adjusted if you have sensitivity.

Whitening and cleaning are different

Scale and polish removes tartar, and polishing can remove some surface stains. They do not change the inner shade of the tooth in the way whitening does. The assessment helps distinguish between these aims.
