The specialty in detail

The 4 treatments in paediatric dentistry.

At the children’s dentist, an early first visit without treatment builds a calm relationship with the clinic. Prevention then plays a major part: learning to brush, watching for the arrival of permanent teeth and stepping in early when it helps.

  • First visit

A short appointment without treatment, so that your child discovers the clinic with confidence and at their own pace.

Who is it for? For young children who have never seen a dentist, or those who are wary of the dental chair.

  • Baby tooth care

Treat baby teeth gently, because they are used every day and hold the space for the permanent teeth.

Who is it for? For children with a cavity, pain or a damaged baby tooth, which nevertheless holds the space for the permanent tooth.

  • Fissure sealants and fluoride

A simple preventive step, without anaesthetic, that protects the deep grooves of the molars.

Who is it for? For children whose permanent molars have deep grooves, depending on their risk of cavities.

  • Space maintainer

Keep room for a permanent tooth after the early loss of a baby tooth, when the assessment justifies it.

Who is it for? For certain children who have lost a baby tooth earlier than expected, after evaluation of the teeth and the space available.

  • Unsure between two treatments?

The most suitable option for your situation is chosen together, after the examination.

Frequently asked questions

Paediatric dentistry: your questions.

These answers remain general. At the consultation, we answer precisely for your situation.

At what age should the first visit be?

Early, without waiting for a problem. This first appointment is mainly about getting the child used to the clinic, so that later visits go smoothly.

Should a baby tooth be treated?

Yes, in most cases. It is used for chewing and holds the space for the permanent tooth that is coming.

My child is afraid, what can I do?

This is common and perfectly understandable. The first appointment is short and without treatment, and the pace is adapted to your child.

Have you heard this before?

“The first visit can wait until the child is in pain.”

It is often the opposite. A pain-free visit gets the child used to the clinic and makes it possible to spot a cavity early.

“The bedtime bottle has no effect on the teeth.”

It does. Milk or juice that stays on the teeth during sleep encourages cavities. After the evening brushing, water is better.

“A child can brush alone as soon as they can hold the brush.”

Not quite. A young child needs an adult to finish the brushing. Good techniques are learnt gradually.

“The brush cleans the grooves of the molars well.”

Not always. These grooves are sometimes too narrow for the bristles. A sealant can protect them, depending on the examination.
