The specialty in detail

The 3 treatments in dental radiology.

A clinical examination does not show everything: bone, roots and impacted teeth only reveal themselves on an image. Dental radiology, at our clinic in Guéliz, helps reach an accurate diagnosis and plan treatments, in particular implants.

  • 2D dental X-rays

Obtain a focused or overall image, depending on the clinical question.

Who is it for? 2D radiography covers several types of dental X-ray.

  • 3D X-ray / cone beam CT dental scan

Study certain dental and bone structures in three dimensions when that information is useful.

Who is it for? Cone beam CT, or CBCT, is a 3D dental X-ray examination.

  • Panoramic X-ray

View the teeth and jaws on a single overall image.

Who is it for? A panoramic X-ray is a 2D image showing a global view of the teeth and jaws.

  • Unsure between two treatments?

The most suitable option for your situation is chosen together, after the examination.

Frequently asked questions

Dental radiology: your questions.

These answers remain general. At the consultation, we answer precisely for your situation.

Is an X-ray routine?

No. An X-ray is offered when it can change the treatment decision, never out of habit.

Can I bring a recent X-ray?

Yes, please do: it can sometimes avoid taking a new image.

Have you heard this before?

“Dental X-rays are dangerous.”

Not when they are justified. The dose from a dental X-ray is low, and it is only requested if it changes the decision. Mention a pregnancy before the X-ray.

“The dentist can see everything with the naked eye.”

No. Roots, bone and cavities between teeth often escape the clinical examination. The X-ray completes what cannot be seen.

“An old X-ray is still enough.”

Not necessarily. The mouth changes, and an old image may no longer reflect the situation. Bring it anyway: it is useful for comparison.

“A panoramic X-ray replaces all other images.”

No. It gives an overall view, but a focused or three-dimensional image is sometimes needed for a detail. The choice depends on the question being asked.
