In brief

  • It replaces a root to support a restoration.
  • When the crown or denture is fitted depends on the assessment and on how stable the implant is.
  • Ask how to clean around the restoration and when to see the dentist again.

An implant is not a natural tooth

It replaces a root to support a restoration. It cannot develop a cavity, but the tissues around it can become inflamed. Hygiene and check-ups therefore remain necessary after placement.

An immediate result is not routine

When the crown or denture is fitted depends on the assessment and on how stable the implant is. A temporary solution may be discussed, but the timescales should be explained for your case rather than promised in advance.

Follow-up matters as much as placement

Ask how to clean around the restoration and when to see the dentist again. Report any pain, bleeding or movement. A promise of unlimited lifespan does not replace a maintenance programme.
